Musical Theatre Factory develops work across an Assembly Line of programming designed to shepherd projects from initial conception to production through increasingly longer and more exclusive presentation opportunities.
Meeting every three weeks, MTF currently facilitates two different writers groups, each with six developing projects. The shows and artists selected for the writers groups receive priority access to other Assembly Line programs.
MTF’s new Representation Round Tables exist as drop-in song clinics and safe-space sharing forums devoted to showcasing emerging people of color, women, and trans* identified artists. These commitment-free round tables seek to support underrepresented writers as well as provide an entry-point to other MTF Assembly Line programs.
Factory Salons happen every-other month, and are informal open mic nights for new musical theatre songs. These community-building events provide an open platform for all artists to share their work, and to seek out new collaborators. For many, the Salon serves as an introduction to the Factory and its mission.
In our 4×15 Series we showcase 15-minute staged segments from four new musicals. Each creative team receives five hours of rehearsal to workshop an excerpt of their piece with a cast of MTF volunteer performers. The program allows writers to see a portion of their work fully staged and on its feet, presented for a public audience with a public discussion of the work. By the start of the 2017-18 season, the Factory will have assisted in the development of over 100 new shows through 4×15.
Get Your Act Together!
When a Factory writer or writing team has developed between 55-75 minutes of material for an Assembly Line show, MTF will equip them with a cast and creative team to undertake a work-in-process reading. These occur over the course of one week, with a limit of 18 rehearsal hours and one public presentation.
Development Residencies are selected from works that have participated in the 4×15 series or other Assembly Line programming and provide writers the unique opportunity to explore their work in a focused manner over the course of an intensive two week workshop. At the end of every residency there is an invited showing of the work-in-progress.
MTF presents an ongoing concert series in partnership with Joe’s Pub, featuring presentations of Factory-developed musicals, MTF member album releases, and Joe’s Pub debuts. As a part of the prestigious Public Theater, Joe’s Pub has been an artistic home and launchpad for both uptown and downtown artists, creating a nexus of cabarets, concerts, and musical theatre.
Musical Theatre Factory Showcase Productions represent the culmination of development work undertaken at the Factory, though not the end of their journey. Presented under the Actors’ Equity Association Showcase Code, these performances are presented with limited production enhancements to demonstrate the potential of a fully realized commercial or non-profit production.
