Ben Bonnema is a NYC-based theatre and concert composer. His work has been performed at venues throughout New York, including the Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Lyceum, the Frederick Loewe Theatre, the Gene Frankel Theatre, Littlefield, The Duplex, Don’t Tell Mama, and the Fifth Floor Theatre with the Second Avenue Dance Company. He has assisted composers on Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including THE PERFORMERS and FEBRUARY HOUSE.
THE LOST GIRL, a new musical he wrote with Arianna Rose, recently received a workshop production at Tisch School of the Arts. He and Christopher Staskel wrote SLASH, a new ten minute musical, as part of TinyRhino Musicals 2. GLAMDROMEDA, a show he wrote with Bryce Norbitz (Book) and Christopher Staskel (Lyrics) was produced at the Brooklyn Lyceum as part of UglyRhino’s 2012 Micro-Season.
AWL MAI-ROH, A song that he and Christopher Staskel wrote, was performed in Joel Fram’s NEW VOICES AT NYU concert.
His setting of AFTERNOON ON A HILL was chosen as one of 2013’s Top 25 Directory Songs by the Directory of Contemporary Musical Theatre Writers. He composed music for WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, a two-woman show by Maria Alexandria Beech (Outstanding Playwriting for a New Script Award). He composed the theme song for the new webseries, “The Gay Agenda.”
He was awarded the 2011 ASCAP Foundation Frederick Loewe Award. He holds an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at Tisch School of the Arts, as well as B.A’s in Music Composition and Theatre Performance from Whitworth University. Ben is a proud member of ASCAP and the Dramatist Guild.
