Carlotta: A New Telenovela Musical
Book and Lyrics by Anita Reyes
Music by Josh Freilich
This adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac is a spirited musical about Carlotta, an overweight, over thirty year old Latina, who has been trying to maintain the role of head chef at the family restaurant, after her mother died 7 years ago. When a successful producer for the Eating Channel has one of her delicious chocolate cupcakes, he calls to offer her a TV show. Desperate to finally be able to create her own recipes she happily accepts and because this could save them from losing the restaurant that has been in the family for 5 generations, but she chickens out at the last minute and sends her younger, skinner sister, Margarita to pose as her. Their switch blade carrying, sharp toothed grandma, who is confined to a motorized cart, is always in their business and their father keeps to himself because he has never gotten over the death of his wife. When both sisters fall in love with the handsome TV producer, chaos ensues – telenovela-style!
