To Hell and Back

Music, Book and Lyrics by Joel B. New

TO HELL AND BACK is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in a heightened version of present-day Nebraska. It is a story of love stronger than death, exploring such themes as loss, the hero complex, finding inspiration, and the wonderful fear of taking that first new step forward.

TO HELL AND BACK had its first, self-produced reading in October 2010. The following year, Ars Nova produced a concert version as part of their “Uncharted” series. Based on its success in that format, it became clear that the truest parts of the work were when music and movement were allowed to do the storytelling, as opposed to traditional book scenes.
